Tabletop Simulator (TTS) is a great tool for playing Magic: The Gathering with friends online. It’s also one of the most affordable ways to do it. Once you make the initial investment in the program ($20ish) you can use it to play any deck. You can also use it for playing other games like popular board games, or Flesh and Blood. Alright, let’s get started.
If you haven’t already done it, start by getting Tabletop Simulator. You’ll need a Steam account.
Finding a Table
Once you have that downloaded and installed you may want to find a table. It comes with some generic tables but there are some great tables created specifically for Magic. They offer some nice feature like zones, or muligan buttons, ect. You can search for tables in the “Workshop” section of the Tabletop Simulator page. The one I use is called “Simply EDH – An Uncluttered Magic the Gathering Commander Table“. You can access your new table from the “Workshop” section in game.
Adding Your Deck
There are a number of different ways to import your deck. The most convient way is to use the table I recommended above. On that table there is a function for importing single cards and decks. Right click on the import area to import your deck.
If you’re particular about what versions of cards are in your digital deck, you can use Frogtown to import your deck. To do this goto the frogtown.me. Click on “My Decks” then “New Decks”.
You can then add cards using the search bar on the left. Clicking the green plus sign will add the card to your deck. The purple square icon let’s you browse the versions available.
You can also use the bulk import option from the”Actions” menu. This will allow you to paste a list of cards. After you do a bulk import you can go through and update the versions to ones that you prefer.
If you’re creating a Commander deck, I recommend that you put the Commander in the sideboard. This will give you quick access to you’re Commander when you drop it into table top simulation. Speaking of which, once you’re finished building your deck, you’ll need to download a Tabletop Simulator version. The option for that is also in the “Actions” menu.
This will give you a file ready for Tabletop Simulator. You’ll need to copy to the correct folder on your computer. The name of the folder is “Saves” and it’s usually located here “Documents/My Games/Tabletop Simulator/Saves“. You can now load your deck in Tabletop Simulator.
